DIARY OF A GERMAN WACHTELHUND
HUNTER
Alexander Hubertus Busch
has chronicled his Wachtelhund hunts in Germany in the Fall 2005
November and December.
The forester who manages the area and plans the hunt has rights to the
animals harvested. He may
give the game to the hunters, take it to a butcher shop, or put it in his
freezer. Some forest areas are owned or rented by a hunting club.
|
|
Next driven day was on the 4th of November on a military
training range (we saw a camp of British tanks - no joke). |
|
|
Here is a fine looking example of a Wachtelhund, Netti Weidelsburg 02-697. He will be
released for the hunt in a few minutes. The hunting stand is behind him. A stand is not used in all hunts. |
|
|
On Nov. 5, the next day in the northern
part of the military area. We got 2 red deer, round about 30 fallow, 25 boar
and round about 10 roe. The fire is a tradition (flambeaus are also used for that
purpose). It is made to be reverence for the quarry and to make it a little
bit ceremonial. For every species is also blown a special signal [tune] with
the hunting horn. And at the end of the Signal, the hunt is over. Hunting is harvesting
but it’s to show that we haven’t forgotten that we killed an animal to eat
it. |
|
|
Next hunt was on the 17th of November. It was the hunt of the
prime minister of Hessen (Mr. Koch) . I was not invited by him. |
|
|
On 18th of November the hunt was again on a military
training area. |

I was that day on the end of tank shooting
range. You could see really far. In front of me was a wide area of broom
(some hundred hectares). Inside that was red deer, boar and roe deer. My high seat was damaged by machine gun
bullets. It was standing at the border of the shooting range. View from the hunting stand. |
|
|
I got a piglet that day. It was caught by
the dog after a bad shot. Ended
it up with the knife (shooting is too dangerous for the dog). |
|
|
The
next hunt was 23rd of November. It was a good bag. I remember 27 red
deer, 25 boar, some roe and one fox. It was a very nice day. The dogs worked
very well. The younger dog caught together with 3 other dogs a wounded male
boar (3 years and 67 kilo) and the older one brought quite a lot of game to
us (red and boar). |

This boar that was caught by the dogs. It
had a bad shot on the front leg. Quite good work from dogs and my girl friend
(Just as explanation: for safety reasons because of the dogs you cant shoot
then and you must end it up with the knife). My girlfriend sticked [knifed]
the wounded boar.
It was really a perfect day with some
really brilliant work from the dogs. Hubertus |
