FALL HUNT
STRATEGY: The basic strategy for fall turkey hunting is to find and break up a
flock, scattering them in all directions. The best way to find and break up a
flock is to have a well trained turkey dog. Then locate yourself as near as
possible to the spot where you broke up the flock and wait 15 minutes.
Gobblers can be called back by using clucks and coarse yelps. Hens and young
birds can be called back using hen yelps and/or kee-kee run calls. Young
birds usually will return within an hour while an old gobbler may take 3 to 4
hours. Hens and their young tend to vocalize a lot as they return. Old
gobblers tend to return silently. The
well trained turkey dog will also track and locate any wounded turkeys
to conserve wild game.

The
Deutscher Wachtelhund is a 300 year old breed developed in the forests of
Germany as a versatile hunting dog. It ranges in weight from 44 – 64 pounds
and is slightly larger than the average Boykin spaniel. . It is a water
lover, and has a temperament like the Boykin. The
DW flushes game like a spaniel, and tracks like a hound making voice or
giving tongue on a hot trail. It is a
courageous dog used to hunt wild boars in Germany and bears in Canada. It
retrieves both feathered and fur game. It is renown for its tracking ability
of game such as the wild boar, and following wounded game blood trails. The
wachtelhund is claimed to have a nose as good as a bloodhound and proves it
in advanced hunting tests by tracking 40 hour old blood trails.

BOYTELS
- The perfect Turkey Dog? Georgi’s Hilary Nickerson crossbred her Boykin named Turk to an American bred
wachtelhund named Bonnie. Using parts from both breed’s name, Hilary named
this new designer hybrid for turkeys, the Boytel. “So what make’s a turkey dog?” Hickoff
of ESPN sports writes “ She should run big. Cast ahead. Check back. Find
turkeys. When she does — either by foot or airborne scent, visual contact, or
all three - she should bark to declare the flock's position, chase singles on
the ground, and get them in the air too.” The DW tracks miles after its game.
It will hunt head high in the air scent or nose close to ground. The
Boykin hunts close and checks back
with its owner for guidance. The DW is an independent thinker hunting alone.
The DW makes the voice on the trail, and when it finds the game. The Boykin
also makes much noise when it gets
into a flock. You know when the flock is located and where it is. Then you
set a place up and call back the flock. A liver brown dog does not need a
camo bag to hide its white spots like droppers from pointer- setter crosses
or Plott (schweisshunde) hound–pointer crosses. Does the hybrid Boytel do this? YES! Nickerson’s Bonnie and Turk
Boytel litter offspring exhibit all the attributes wanted in the perfect
turkey dog. The Nickerson’s report great success with their offspring in
hunting turkeys and other game. Ron
Magnano, a great turkey caller, and centerfold of the premier issue of NWTF’s Turkey Country Fall 2009
with his two Boytels, has had outstanding results with over 15 turkeys a year
for several years. Dixie Lou, sister of SUZY QUE, was featured here. Ron just passed his 100, 101, and 102 and
is headed to Kentucky for more this year. VERSATILE: Excellent flushers for pheasants, quail, and love water for duck hunting. Retrieve squirrels and rabbits. USE this opportunity to try this new killer hybrid out. HUNTERS ONLY APPLY PLEASE. They will be great companion dogs, but they need to hunt. |
